The Institute of Biology is a unit of the Faculty of Geography and Biology of the Pedagogical University of Cracow. The main functional objective of the Institute of Biology is to educate students, improve the skills of scientific staff, disseminate knowledge and cooperate with research centers in the country and abroad.

Research topics carried out within the Institute are interdisciplinary. In the field of natural, biological and environmental sciences, both laboratory and field tests are performed. They concern, among others nature and environmental protection, functioning of living organisms in optimal and stressful conditions, as well as issues related to botany, ecology, zoology and chemistry.

At the Institute of Biology, 59 staff members are currently employed, including 6 full professors, 17 associated professors, 27 assistant professors with a PhD and 9 technical staff members. There are two student scientific clubs at the Institute – the “Biosphere” Naturalists’ Club, and the Scientific Club of Biology and Geography PhD students.

The Institute of Biology has the rights to confer PhD in biological sciences in the field of biology and the habilitation degree in biological sciences.
